A good sportsman is never satisfied with what he has, believes Gautam Gambhir
After announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket, Gautam Gambhir is of the opinion that a good sportsman always wants to do better and is never satisfied with what he has. He also mentioned that had he has underachieved and had he got more support, things could have been better for him.
Gambhir is currently playing his last first-class game in the ongoing Ranji Trophy and has decided to hand his boots after this. The Delhi opener played 58 Test matches and scored 4154 runs for the Indian team at an average of 41.95. But, he is remembered for his contributions with the bat in 2007 World T20 and 2011 Cricket World Cup finals where he scored 75 and 97 respectively to ensure wins for the Men in Blue.
After declaring his retirement, the former opener has stated that he wanted to win one more game or score one more hundred in his cricket career. He also opined that his career could have been far better than what he had done so far.
“See, a sportsman's mindset is that he thinks he could have won one more game or scored one more hundred. A good sportsman is never satisfied with what he has,” Gambhir told Mumbai Mirror.
“Well, it was a mixed bag at the moment. But to be honest I don't think I am in a position to judge anything just yet as there are many emotions within me and around me. If I have to really dig deep then I can say that while there are two World Cups, there are a few Test series etc. but I think I have underachieved. If I had a bit more support may be things would have been far better. But then let bygones are bygones, I will still sleep well.”
Speaking about his match-winning knocks in the two ICC event finals, Gambhir said, “Both are special moments of my playing life. In 2007 when I was not picked for the 50-over World Cup, I thought I would never get to play any World Cup or a marquee tournament. I thought of retirement at that moment. But then look what God gave me --not one but two World Cup titles.”
“Not at all (missing out on a 100 in World Cup final). I was happy to score 97 runs and not worry about the balance three I could not get. It all worked out well when we ended up winning the finals.”
Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to title win on a couple of occasions in 2012 and 2014 and was one of their best batsmen in the top-order along with Robin Uthappa. He had scored 4218 runs in his IPL career from 154 matches in the cash-rich league playing for Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders.
“I am thankful to KKR for giving me the opportunity to lead the side. I was always eager to express myself as a leader and leave my stamp. That urge was completed through KKR. I was fortunate to have some extremely talented players and support staff in the team. In Venky
Gambhir also spoke about the current Indian team and the
“They are in a transition and will find it tough in Australia. I think in their own backyard they are a handful. Heart says India, but mind says Australia,” the former opener told.
“He is learning fast. He has a lot of respect from his teammates because of his batting ability. He is in unreal form, touchwood. I am sure he will scale new heights.”
