India vs Australia | Travis Head disappointed by MCG crowd's decision to boo Mitchell Marsh
Australian batsman Travis Head has expressed disappointment over the behaviour of the crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as a group of spectators booed Mitchell Marsh. On the field too, it was a disappointing day for Marsh as he went wicketless after bowling 15 overs in the day’s play.
In the Boxing Day Test, the Australian team went in with a single change from the last Test match. Peter Handscomb was replaced by Mitchell Marsh who was picked because of his utility at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which tends to be a slow pitch. But the move did not seem to go down well with the local crowd as they booed Mitchell March on various occasions, seemingly for replacing the local player Handscomb in the team.
"I don't think it's great. Obviously, we've seen it with Kohli as well but for Mitch, who worked his bum off today, I thought he bowled exceptionally well. I thought he created pressure in tough conditions and fought really hard. I don't think any Australian cricketer in Australia deserves to be booed," Head said.
"I understand the Victorian crowd, Petey obviously missing out, but I think it's pretty poor for Mitchy to cop that. I think Mitch is a character to get on with it," he said.
Marsh, who most probably picked for the added advantage of his bowling he brings with him, bowled 15 overs spending runs at just over 1.5 runs per over. Though he failed to get any wicket he did his job with discipline but was booed by the spectators twice after the announcement of his bowling spells. But Head assessed that the all-rounder is not one to get bothered by all the extravaganza.
"As he showed, he did his business, he did his work, he bowled exceptionally well, did the job that was needed for the team and that's what Mitch has always done.
"He's always been someone to get the energy around the group, lead from the front and I think he did that and in tough conditions to grab the ball and bowl the way he did was really good. He created a couple of chances as well.
"I think the way he showed today, I think great team man, great fella, worked his backside off for the boys today and I think he did a wonderful job so yeah disappointing and hopefully that won't be the case for the next couple of days."
The Boxing Day Test match started today at the MCG and after electing to bat first India were at 215/2 at the end of the first day’s play with Virat Kohli(47*) and Cheteshwar Pujara(63*) at the crease for India.
