Cricket has had a long history with comedy of error moments that have forced games to take unexpected twist and turns. The Ashes witnessed one such incident as the Marsh brothers decided to celebrate Mitch’s century midway on the pitch while the ball was still in play, leaving Steve Smith incensed.

The 2017 Ashes have provided cricket lovers with quite a few flashpoints as well as moments of humour, which have kept the interest around the series alive despite Australia securing the coveted urn in just three matches. Mitchell Marsh justified his controversial selection over Peter Handscomb in Perth with a brilliant century and followed that up with another one in Sydney. However, this one had a conclusion that was as humorous as it was entertaining.

On the first ball of the 174th over, Mitchell, playing at 99, hit Tom Curan's short of length delivery in front of square and ran off for a single. Realizing that a double was on, he ran for the second but after seeing his brother midway on the pitch decided to embrace him to celebrate his second century in the series. What could have turned into a disaster, ended up being an absolute treat for fans as sense prevailed and the brothers decided to actually complete the run. While the two were seen smiling off at the incident, it won’t be the image that goes down in Ashes folklore.

That honour will belong to Steve Smith whose reaction to the incident was a perfect combination of happiness turning to shock to a nervous laughter. As the Aussie dressing room rose to applaud the younger Marsh’s century, it was only Smith who realized that the party could be spoilt and his reaction was a testament to that. After his standing applause quickly turned into frustration at what the brothers were doing on the pitch, the realization that the danger had passed resulted in a few choice of words, which was followed by a nervous smile on the captain’s face. However, Mitch was quite ironically dismissed in the very next ball as he ended his innings with 101 runs.
