I hope that Test cricket doesn’t die while I’m still alive, says Bishan Singh Bedi
Former Indian spinner Bishan Singh Bedi stated that he hoped that upcoming Test series against England would help generate a buzz around Test cricket and help sustain the format in today’s word. Bedi also added that he would like to see more of wrist spinner - Kuldeep Yadav in the Test format.
India will go up against an optimistic England Test side in next month’s five-match Test series and will hope to exact some revenge on their English counterparts after the recent ODI series loss to Eoin Morgan’s team. Virat Kohli & Co. will look to kill the demons of 2014 as they head into the Test series with their head on their shoulders and an eye on the series triumph. And highly respected Bishan Singh Bedi hoped that a beautiful Test series amongst the top two teams in cricket at the moment would help reignite the love for the longer format of the game again.
“My philosophy is simple. I hope for the best but I’m also prepared for the worst. I hope and wish that Test cricket doesn’t die while I’m still alive. It must flourish, it has to flourish to keep cricket alive. What are we looking for? The game of cricket must not lose out on its character.
“Can you imagine any other sport doing what cricket has done? People don’t have time to play golf so they cut it down from 18 holes to three holes. It wouldn’t happen. It wouldn’t happen in football either. Or any other sport, Bedi told Independent.co.uk.
Bedi was all praise for young Indian wrist spinner - Kuldeep Yadav, who has turned into an indispensable weapon for the Indian limited-overs team under the leadership of Virat Kohli. Bedi was quick to reiterate that Yadav was meant to be taken care of by the senior members of the squad against Joe Root's Test team.
“He has been quite a revelation – I’ve enjoyed watching him. A few of the batsmen, particularly Joe Root, looked as though they had found him out by the end of the one-day series.
“But my contention has always been that we have to preserve this kid (Yadav). He has to preserved for the longest form of the game. I’m not very enthused by him in T20 and one-day cricket – he has done well, but he must be preserved for the longest version, which is Test cricket.
“He enjoys his craft and he’s able to transport the fun and enjoyment that he shows to the spectators. That’s perhaps his valuable attribute. I like to think that he has come along at just the right time, not just for spin bowling in India but spin bowling everywhere,” Bedi added.
