Dinesh Karthik : The most important thing is for the group to connect as individuals
Newly appointed Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik has come out calling for a sense of unity in the KKR camp ahead of a challenging season of the IPL. Karthik has also added that he finds himself lucky as most teams would be very jealous that they have three wrist spinners in the team.
The Kolkata Knight Riders have made some serious decisions regarding the strategy of the team and its view on the future in the past few months. The most surprising one was the decision to let skipper Gautam Gambhir leave to return to his home team, Delhi Daredevils. The team owners along with coach Jacques Kallis took part in an interesting auction which saw them pick up a host of India U-19 players which included Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill and Kamlesh
KKR franchise, in the morning today, announced their decision to appoint Tamil Nadu-born Dinesh Karthik as the captain of the team for this season, ahead of Robin Uthappa. Karthik has been a part of the Indian team for a while now where he serves as a backup to veteran player MS Dhoni who bats in the middle-order. Karthik has stated that the team needs to get together and form a sense of unity if they were to taste success this year.
"One of the most important things is for the whole group to connect as individuals and at the same time have a bonding sort of a thing. That's the first step. In terms of building the team, it's a journey - we're going to be together for three years, we have the opportunity to chop and change a little bit every auction but the major auction is over and we know we're going to be having this team for the next three years,"
"The most important thing is to get the best out of the players and then keep moving forward, with probably a little bit of chopping and changing if need be. Ideally, we don't want to be in that situation. At this stage, it's important to go into the tournament with this team and looking to do the best that we can," Karthik said in an interview with Cricbuzz.
Karthik was quick to point out that he has a strong team with a lot of young talent on display, which is sure to be a bonus point in the long run. The likes of wrist spinners like Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and the in-form Kuldeep Yadav are sure to make the other franchise’s jealous, or at least Karthik thinks so.
"Everyone wants wrist spinners because it's hard to pick them and get them away, and they have the ability to pick wickets which is the most important thing. It's good that we have those three bowlers with us and how we use them, how I'm going use them as a leader, is going to be critical to the team moving forward.
"One's a mystery bowler (Sunil Narine), one legspinner (Piyush Chawla) and one left-arm chinaman (Kuldeep Yadav). It's a good place to start. Most teams would be very jealous that we have three wrist spinners in our midst. That's a nice place to be," added Karthik.
