Virat Kohli returns to practice after the injury and undergoes light training
Virat Kohli, who suffered a neck strain in his last IPL match, has returned to practice and underwent light training along with Indian assistant coach Sanjay Bangar. Kohli spent a few hours before wrapping up and is expected to continue with a similar schedule over the next week.
It has been less than two weeks since Virat Kohli suffered a neck strain while fielding in his last IPL match for Royal Challengers Bangalore and now, he has returned to the cricket field and hit the nets at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) facility on Wednesday.
Kohli, who had ruled himself out of his county stint for Surrey in June, arrived at the BKC facility’s indoor nets early afternoon with Team India assistant coach Sanjay Bangar. The skipper trained for a few hours before calling it a day and is expected to continue with a similar schedule over the next week.
Kohli would be undergoing the fitness test on June 15, which would be the second day of the India versus Afghanistan Test at Chinnaswamy Stadium. He is expected to regain his full fitness over the course of next two weeks. According to reports from TOI, Kohli would be boarding the flight to Ireland along with all the players and would be available for all the matches.
Team India would be playing 2 T20I against Ireland on June 27 and 29, before the tour of England starts on July 3. India would play 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs, followed by high octane 5 match Test series starting on August 1.
“He’s begun with a relatively lighter stint at the indoor nets. In a couple of days, he’ll be back on the field and by the end of the first two weeks (of June) – around the15th – he’ll be in Bangalore for the fitness test and to begin training,” a source told TOI.
BCCI sources revealed that contrary to the ‘highly exaggerated reports surrounding Kohli’s injury, the Indian skipper had avoided the county stint as a precautionary measure to ensure that remains 100 percent for the tour of England.
“Surrey was an option; the England tour is a responsibility. He’s taken a break whenever there was a need for it. That’s why he sat out of the last T20 in South Africa and did not play in the Nidahas Trophy. It shows that priorities are well in place. It's unfortunate that Virat hasn't been able to leave for Surrey but recovering fully in time is the more important thing,” the source added.
