VIDEO | India awarded free-hit after Alex Carey appealed for hit-wicket after breaking stumps
Cricket rules can be borderline controversial at some moments, but thanks to the high-end technology available nowadays, it has been well and good recently. After Alex Carey’s gloves disturbed the stumps, he was confused about the same and appealed for a hit-wicket, only to be given a no-ball.
There is a popular Youtube clipping. Hashan Tillakaratne was in his crease after the ball was dead, and then Justin Langer deliberately tipped a bail off the stumps and his team-mates instantly appealed for hit-wicket. It was a very old clip. Fast forward, Langer is right now the coach of the team, a coach who talks less cricket and more about “Elite Honesty”.
If you think Carey’s act today was somehow inspired by his coach, one may be mistaken, but wouldn’t find hard to draw a parallel. When KL Rahul rocked back to hit Adam Zampa for a cut towards backward point region, Carey’s hands hit the stumps and in a moment, the Aussie keeper started appealing for the hit-wicket.
That caught Rahul by surprise as he was immediately seen discussing with Carey about what had happened. The umpire, however, immediately went upstairs to check the details, and found out that it was Carey’s gloves who was the culprit. He immediately called it a no-ball and awarded India a free-hit for Carey’s mistake.
