Sourav Ganguly has mentioned that Rishabh Pant had the chance of taking India to a victory in the first T20I against Australia. The former skipper has also mentioned that the youngster needs to be told that he has the ability to play straight and score runs and there is no need of improvisation.

Pant scored 20 off just 15 balls before getting out to Andrew Tye while trying to playing a reverse scoop to a full-length delivery in the first T20I. The Indians were chasing a target of 174 in 17 overs and they were in a commanding position when the youngster was dismissed by Tye in the 16th over. Former India captain has advised Pant to be more careful in his shot selections and learn from the mistakes in international cricket.

“Rishabh Pant could’ve won the match for India with Dinesh Karthik. The way he was batting with Karthik and took the match close for India, the shot didn’t have any value,” Ganguly told IndiaTV.

According to Ganguly, the senior members in the team should make the 21-year-old understand that he has the skill and is powerful enough to get runs by playing straight and there is no need of going for innovative shots more in any format of the game. After Pant’s dismissal in the penultimate over, the visitors fell short by four runs against the Aussies in the opening game of the series.

“He is a young player and somebody needs to tell him that when he has the ability and power to hit straight, he doesn’t need to play these kind of shots. He is not in bad form. He just has to change his shot selection. It is not a difficult thing to do. I am not concerned with his form,” the former captain added.
