IPL 2019 | Delhi Capitals should thank Kagiso Rabada, reveals Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir is adamant that the Delhi Capitals squad owe South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada a big one after his heroics in the super over against Kolkata Knight Riders earned them a win. Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi takes on Ravichandran Ashwin’s Kings XI Punjab at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Monday.
Delhi Capitals looked to be cruising towards a comfortable victory at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Saturday as they were in the driving seat to beat the Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata Knight Riders, who posted a total of 185 in the first innings. Requiring just six runs from the last over, KKR’s Kuldeep Yadav stepped in and bowled a brilliant final over ensuring that the match ended in a tie that consequently enforced a super-over scenario.
The home team scored 11 runs in their segment of the tie-breaker, which meant that KKR needed to score 12 runs to pull off a win. In came Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada, who did a brilliant job to restrict the likes of Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik, and thereby successfully pulled off a win for Ricky Ponting’s team.
In his column for TOI, former India opener Gautam Gambhir was all praise for his former teammate and stated that the players in the Delhi dressing room owe Rabada a huge deal for winning the match on home turf.
"This year Delhi has a new name, a bundle of marketing activities, new video to announce their ideology, freshly designed outfits and points on the table. They nearly didn't have the last set of two points almost having made a hash of an easy game against KKR. Chasing 186 to win DC were galloping at 170 for two. From there to win the game in a super over is challenging your luck far too much. They should thank Kagiso Rabada for some old-fashioned death bowling in the super over. Prithvi Shaw is carrying his high backlift riding on an even higher confidence quotient. When they take on Kings XI Punjab on Monday, Prithvi's role should not be altered. Mohali is an even better wicket and it should suit his style of play," Gambhir wrote in his column.
Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, also gave credit to Punjab who seemed to have moved on from the whole R Ashwin - Jos Butler ‘
"The Punjab team are in good health. The way they dominated Mumbai on Saturday it is obvious that they have moved on from Buttler-Ashwin episode, while the analysts are still debating," Gambhir concluded.
