VIDEO | Australia request umpires to change bails as they remain unmoved despite ball crashing onto the stumps
During the World Cup and IPL, incidents of bails not coming off the groove were aplenty and once again, the issue has come into the spotlight. A frustrated Aussie side sarcastically requested the umpires to change the bails after they remained static despite the ball crashing onto Joe Root's stumps.
They say cricket is a batsman's game, and with every passing day, the statement seems to be getting truer and truer, thanks to the rules and regulations in place. For a bowler, the options of getting a batsman out are limited, but one of the easier ways of taking a wicket is by rattling the stumps, taking everything else out of the equation. But imagine being a bowler, hitting the stump, and still not taking a wicket? Well, that is exactly what happened to James Pattinson today.
On the final ball of the 21st over, a fired-up Pattinson came steaming into Joe Root, desperately searching for a wicket. As the ball past the outside edge of Root's bat, there seemed to be a very loud noise, possibly coming off Root's willow, and as the Aussies went up in unison, the umpire answered their calls by ruling the batsman out.
But Root, who knew he had not hit the ball, went up for a review instantly. Replays showed that there was indeed a noise as the ball passed Root's bat, but bizarrely enough, it came off the stumps, and not his willow. Yes, despite the ball crashing onto the stumps and even the off-stump shaking for a good few seconds, the bails remained unmoved, leaving the Australian side in disbelief.
But all was well within the two camps as they took the incident light-heartedly, chuckling as they made their way back to the other end. Then, in an extremely funny moment, Pattinson indulged in friendly banter with umpire Joel Wilson, and along with his skipper Tim Paine, suggested the umpire to change the bails, as they sarcastically indicated that it was impossible to remove it off the groove.
