IPL could discern whether MS Dhoni should continue to play for India, opines Brian Lara
Former West Indies captain Brian Lara believes that a tournament like the Indian Premier League could be the one that decides the future of MS Dhoni in the Indian team. The veteran batsman, without any hesitation, termed Dhoni as a legend of the game and hence he would know when to call it a day.
Ever since India lost the World Cup semifinal in England, Dhoni, who had taken an indefinite break from cricket, hasn’t been seen in the Blue jersey. The possibility, in fact, all possibilities of this hiatus became the talk of the season and it’s never-ending. Perhaps, till the day Dhoni himself makes a statement.
Meanwhile, MSK Prasad had revealed that the management is looking at the young Rishabh Pant as the automatic replacement of the veteran. However, it’s a fact known to everyone that Pant is not as equipped a wicketkeeper as the legend. A drop in Pant’s batting form has triggered the critics and the crowd and we all know about the reactions, the boos and the "Dhoni Dhoni" chants.
Lara’s opinion in this situation is that despite India having young resources like Pant and Sanju Samson, the availability of MS Dhoni cannot be ruled out. With a new edition of IPL nearing, the ex Windies captain believes that the marquee T20 league will have a lot to do in the decision making of the veteran’s return.
“India’s got some young talent like Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. But I really feel that somewhere is a tournament, like the IPL, maybe a decision can be made whether Dhoni should continue or he has the ability to continue. He is a great player and he does not want to be a liability to the squad,” Lara opined, as quoted by the Sportstar.
"So, it's hard for me to say, you know, or have an opinion on it. But he is a legend of the game. And at some point in time, he would know that even he’s got to make way for the younger ones.”
