India vs Australia | Sunil Gavaskar likely to miss out on Border-Gavaskar trophy presentation
Sunil Gavaskar would most likely miss the presentation ceremony of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, which will be handed over to Virat Kohli next week. The former batting legend was initially asked to attend the event but revealed that Cricket Australia has not contacted him in recent weeks.
The Indian cricket team has done a brilliant job in ensuring that the Border-Gavaskar trophy is retained after they beat Australia in the third Test at the MCG by 131 runs. The victory ensured that India could not be defeated in the ongoing series as they took a 2-1 lead with one match left to play.
In doing so, the visitors have earned bragging rights and Kohli would be presented with the prestigious Border-Gavaskar trophy ahead of the series finale in Sydney next week. However, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar, after whom the trophy is partially named, would most likely miss out on the presentation ceremony altogether.
As per reports in India Today, Gavaskar is set to miss out on the event after he received no invitation from Cricket Australia. However, Aussie great Allan Border has been expected to hand over the trophy to the Indian captain.
“I was sent a letter by Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland in May asking about my availability to present the Border-Gavaskar trophy and I would have been happy to go. But he stepped down [in October] and there has been no further contact,” Gavaskar said in an interview with India Today.
However, Cricket Australia’s head of communications Tim Whittaker told the Australian Associated Press that the board had sent two emails to Gavaskar inviting him to Sydney but had received “no reply to either”.
Ravi Shastri’s boys won the first Test in Adelaide by a narrow margin before being humbled by the hosts in Perth. The men in Blue fought back to win the Boxing Day Test by 131 runs last week to take a 2-1 lead.
“I am happy that the Border-Gavaskar trophy is staying in India and very happy with the way team has played,” Gavaskar added.
The trophy for the Test series between India and Australia was first named after Border and Gavaskar in 1996 after the legendary players were the first two batsmen to cross the 10,000-run in modern day cricket.
