VIDEO | Ambati Rayudu’s superhuman effort goes in vain as ball “bounces” for a six
Misjudgment is a part and parcel of the game, but if it goes for a six after a very good effort, it has to be disheartening. Ambati Rayudu has all the reasons to be disappointed as his superhuman effort at the deep went in vain as the ball bounced off his hand to land on the wrong side of the fence.
It was a game that moved slowly as the Australian batsmen, despite staying patient at the crease, failed to up the ante until the 45th over of the game. It seemed like a game plan as they targeted Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the last five overs of the innings. With Marcus Stoinis and Peter Handscomb on the crease, it seemed possible for the home team to reach a total around 310 runs.
Staying true to their plans, Handscomb took the Indian pacer head-on from the very first delivery of the 46th over. That was a harmless short ball against which the Victorian unleashed his inner Ricky Ponting to pull it over square leg. Sensing an opportunity, Rayudu ran from backward square leg towards the trajectory of the ball and did a very good job of reaching near it.
With the ball in sight, he made a frog jump to get hold of the catch, which was difficult but very much possible. However, the ball, after getting the obstacle of his hand, bounced off instantly and landed on the other side of the boundary to be adjudged as a six. Although Bhuvneshwar dismissed Handscomb on the very next ball to bring the curtains down on a fine innings, that six proved costly for India as it slowly shifted the death-over momentum in Australia’s favour.
