ICC World Cup 2019 | At no point have I said that the public is not behind us, says Jonny Bairstow
Jonny Bairstow has cleared the air surrounding his comments and has stated that at no point has he ever said that the fans are not behind England. The English opener has been the talk of the town and faced backlash for his comments where he stated that âeveryone wants us to failâ.

After Englandâs back-to-back losses against Sri Lanka and Australia, the team came under scrutiny and received severe criticism from many experts including former English greats. The Centurion from the Englandâs win over India has stated that the last week was a difficult one for him but he never said that the public is not behind England.Â
âLook, Iâm not saying I want everyone to come out and abuse me! By no means am I saying that. At no point have I said that public is not behind us. The interview (press conference) had taken place with six, eight, 10 journalists in a very jovial, relaxed manner. To read how it was taken was very disappointing. But thereâs nothing you can change about the pastâŠyesterdayâs news is todayâs fish and chip paper, thatâs the saying isnât it,â Bairstow told reporters.
Bairstow silenced his harshest critics with a scintillating ton and helped his side get off to a fantastic start. Skipper Eoin Morgan has also come forward and said that he has no issues with Bairstow as the pumped up opener only got better after the whole off field fiasco.
âHe (Bairstow) does tend to get fired up a lot, and that suits him regardless of whatâs happened during the week, any week, injuries or not. He likes a bit of fire in his belly, and I donât mind that when he comes out and plays like that and feels like the way he did. I think itâs outstanding. So weâre delighted for him,â Morgan said.
With the win against India, Englandâs hopes of making it to the semi-finals are very much alive and a win in their last group stage fixture against New Zealand will secure them a spot in the top four.
