ICC World Cup 2019 | Sri Lanka to continue wearing their 'lucky' yellow World Cup Jerseys
The Sri Lankan Cricket team will continue to wear the flashy yellow shirts that they wore in their previous encounter against England. Sri Lanka, who caused the biggest upset of the 2019 World Cup by beating England, have sought special permission from the ICC to continue wearing the yellow jersey.
Prior to the start of the 2019 World Cup, not many people would have given Sri Lanka a chance to qualify for the semi-final, especially in their current form. However, Dimuth Karunaratne's men shocked the whole cricketing fraternity by taking down favourites and hosts England at Headingley on June 21. Despite their first-choice jerseys being predominantly dark blue, the Lankans wore their alternative yellow kit in their match against England, and to their surprise, the jersey seems to have brought lady luck along with it. As a result, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board have sought permission from the ICC to continue wearing the "lucky" yellow jersey for the rest of the matches.
"We approved Sri Lanka's request to carry on wearing Yellow as the colour. Every team chose an alternate colour prior to the start of the tournament" said an International Cricket Council spokesperson to AFP, as quoted by Times of India. Sri Lanka, who now have a realistic chance of reaching the semi-final if they win their next 3 matches, travel to Chester-Le-Street next, where they will take on the struggling Proteas.
