Virat Kohli has revealed that he was thinking of using Vijay Shankar in the 46th over before discussions with MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma changed his mind and everything panned out well. The Indian skipper also stated that he was more proud of India’s second innings than his first innings century.

Defending 251 would have always been difficult in ODIs and on a pitch like that of Nagpur, it is the best decision makers who would end up as the winners. Kohli revealed that he had a similar decision-making situation after the 45th over when Australia needed 28 overs from four overs and he had two specialist bowlers remaining.

Jasprit Bumrah had one over left and Mohammad Shami had two, and in-from Marcus Stoinis was expected to see off Bumrah’s fiery spell before finishing things off and levelling the series 1-1. It was a tough call for Kohli as it could have decided the outcome of the match.

"I was thinking of using Vijay in the 46th over, but I spoke to Rohit and MS (Dhoni) and they said, let's stick with Shami and Bumrah, and if they get some wickets we're on top. That is exactly what happened. Vijay kept it stump-to-stump, kept it simple, and it worked," said the skipper after the match, reported PTI.

"It's always nice to speak to Rohit, he's the vice captain. MS (Dhoni) has been around for so long, and you go and speak to the bowler as well. Invariably they're all on the same page," Kohli added.

Bumrah played a crucial role in the death overs yet again. He was given the ball in the 46th and the 48th over and he conceded just two runs in them scalping the wickets of Pat Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile.  He returned with figures of 2/29 and Kohli couldn’t stop praising him.

"He (Bumrah) is a champion, two wickets in an over, just turned the game, happy to have him in our team," said Kohli.

Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Match after his 40th ODI ton on Tuesday. On a day, when most Indian batsmen failed to click, the skipper stood firm to play a crucial knock of 116 from 120 balls, which has looked significant after India’s narrow victory. However, he was quick to downplay his achievement by reducing it to just a number.

"It felt good (to get to 40 ODI hundreds) but it is just a number. It feels good to win games for India… When I walk in to bat, when the situation gets difficult, I have no choice but to put my head down and bat through the innings," said Kohli.

"I'm more proud of our second innings than our first. Vijay Shankar batted (46) outstandingly, but he was unfortunately run out and we lost Kedar and MS in quick succession," he added.
