Stuart Broad and James Anderson can't play together anymore, feels Michael Vaughan
Former English skipper Michael Vaughan feels that England need to take a call on playing James Anderson and Stuart Broad together, with both players in the wrong side of their 30s. The duo is the most successful bowlers in English history and have taken a total of 1042 Test wickets between them.
With Jimmy Anderson now 37 and Stuart Broad 33, age isn't on their side, especially with the likes of Jofra Archer and Sam Curran pushing their way into the team with every passing match. However, in the recently concluded Ashes, after Anderson was ruled out with injury, Broad proved age is just a number as he finished as England's highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets, barely making them feel the absence of Anderson.
But despite that, former skipper Michael Vaughan feels that it won't be feasible to play both the veterans together anymore and believes that the team management would need to smartly manage the duo in the future.
"I don't think it is right both of them play now. It might be that Broad plays one series and Anderson plays one series," Vaughan told BCC Radio 5, reported Times of India.
"They are not going to like it, but they are at that stage of their careers where England are going to have to manage the combination very smartly," he added.
After drawing the Ashes 2-2 last week, England relinquished the urn at home for the first time since 2001 and despite them not losing the series, most of the players and fans were left empty-hearted due to the result. Vaughan feels that the focus should now be purely on regaining the urn from the Aussies in their own backyard in two years' time and that the team management must start planting seeds for that.
"I want to see a disciplined way of playing and the World Cup is in the bag now," Vaughan said.
"The most important thing going forward is the Ashes in two years. It is the Test team that needs a real focus over two and a half years of real dedication and structure," he concluded.
