The second T20I between India Women and South Africa Women in Surat was abandoned without even the toss taking place due to the persistent rain. The Indian women lead the five-match series 1-0 courtesy of their 11-run victory in the first encounter at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium.

After treating a full house at the same venue to a low-scoring thriller on Tuesday, both teams had to settle for an actionless affair in the second outing yesterday. The hopeful locals who gathered in good number — despite the negative weather forecasts — were left disappointed as the umpires were forced to abandon the match without even a toss. The covers were firmly in place in the lead up to the match. There was an inspection scheduled at 8 pm local, which is when the umpires made the call.

India survived a late scare from Mignon du Preez — who hit a 43-ball 59 — to register a rather convincing victory over South Africa in the first T20I. Defending only 130, the hosts bowled out the visitors for 119. Off-spinning all-rounder Deepti Sharma delivered a fine bowling spell, returning with figures of three for eight, which included three maidens.

The Indian women will now go into the third of the five games on September 29 — also scheduled at the same venue in Surat — with their 1-0 lead intact.
