IND vs AFG | Surya’s masterclass alongside Bumrah’s mastery outclass Afghanistan in Barbados
India beat Afghanistan by 47 runs in their first Super Eights game at Barbados. Suryakumar Yadav’s 53 off 28 deliveries helped the Men in Blue reach 181/8 whereas Afghanistan struggled while chasing and Jasprit Bumrah’s three-wicket haul ultimately led to a massive 47-run defeat.
India faced Afghanistan in the first Super Eight game of Group 1 at Barbados. Winning the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bat first, a decision that initially faltered as he fell to Fazalhaq Farooqi in the third over. Adding to India's early woes, Rishabh Pant was dismissed by Rashid Khan, bringing Suryakumar Yadav to the crease. Furthermore, Virat Kohli and Surya steadied the innings, taking the score to 60/2 by the eighth over. Virat Kohli's dismissal to Rashid Khan in the ninth over added to India's setbacks. With Shivam Dube joining Suryakumar Yadav, India reached 79/3 at the halfway mark. After Dube's departure, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya rebuilt the innings forging a crucial 60-run partnership that took India to 138/4 by the 16th over. Suryakumar Yadav's aggressive batting saw him reach a brisk fifty off just 28 balls during this phase. However, the Afghan pacers, led by Naveen-ul-Haq and Farooqi, tightened the screws in the death overs, claiming the wickets of Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Despite a brief cameo by Axar Patel towards the end, India managed to post 181/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
In response, Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz came out firing, smashing 13 runs off the first over, only to be halted by Jasprit Bumrah in the very next over. The Afghan batting woes escalated when Axar Patel dismissed Ibrahim Zadran, followed by Bumrah sending Hazratullah Zazai packing leaving them reeling at 27/3 after five overs. Despite a resilient 43-run partnership between Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai which took them to 66/3 in 10 overs, Indian bowlers struck back swiftly. Kuldeep Yadav removed Naib in the 11th over, and Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Omarzai in the next, reducing Afghanistan to 71/5. With 107 runs required from the final eight overs, Afghan batters Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi attempted to revive their innings pushing the score to 101/5 after 15 overs, still needing a daunting 81 runs off 30 balls. Their hopes were dashed when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Zadran in the 16th over. Despite a brief resistance, Afghanistan's chances dwindled further as Rashid Khan fell in the 18th over, sealing their fate. Ultimately, Afghanistan crumbled to 134 all out, falling short by 47 runs as India clinched a comprehensive victory.
