ENG vs SA | Twitter reacts to Wood's costly misjudgment handing surprised de Kock second lifeline
The fact that cricket is a game of fine margins isn't reiterated enough, and that's after being mentioned in every match broadcast to exist. Mark Wood became another example of the same on Friday after a trivial check on what seemed to be a slam-dunk sitter turned out to be quite the opposite.
South Africa raced off the blocks on a fresh strip in St Lucia to put up 63 runs in the powerplay without losing a single wicket. Their efforts were pretty much entirely on the back of a Quinton de Kock blitzkrieg with the explosive opener registering a 22-ball half-century laced with three boundaries and four maximums. However, just when the wicket-keeper batter seemed to have made a fatal mistake to end a potentially game-changing knock, a silly error from England allowed de Kock to continue adding to his tally.
After a tidy opening effort, Adil Rashid took the ball again in the ninth over and tried to flummox de Kock straightaway with a googly. The Proteas batter continued his no-holds barred approach to slog sweep it high in the air albeit this time around, he failed to get the desired coonnection. Mark Wood, stationed at backward square leg, was all set to be the benefactor of as simple as catches come but much to everyone's shock, the express quick stood his ground even as the ball dipped fervently. Ultimately, Wood had to stretch forwards while sitting on one knee to grasp the ball in his palms and England immedaitely huddled together to celebrate their opening breakthrough.
However, the umpires decided to carry out a routine catch to check the fairness of the catch and the replays showed Wood had actually allowed the Kookaburra to graze the ground while cupping it off the turf, thus letting de Kock add seven more runs to his 58 before being scalped again. Nevertheless, Twitterati was quick to bash Wood for his lazy attempt that could have proved to be the deciding factor of the contest.

Not clean
Quinton De Kock lucky that catch was considered not clean by Mark Wood, so first wkt attempt went futile... England is disappointed so Adil Rashid 😳#T20worldcup #ENGvsSA #SAvsENG #ENGvSA #SAvENG pic.twitter.com/jsY04HP9uT

Great decision
Very good decision by the 3rd umpire in the end. Clearly some part of the ball was touching the ground. De Kock survives. Mark Wood missed a golden chance. #ENGvsSA #SAvsENG #CricketTwitter
