The days of the Naagin Derby are officially over; it's time the hotly contested Bangladesh-Sri Lanka rivalry be rechristened as the Timed Out derby. After several to-and-fro exchanges referencing the infamous timed-out incident, Mushfiqur Rahim reciprocated its kind after sealing the ODI series.

Bangladesh conquered a second successive home bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka, in Chattogram on Monday, with a resounding triumph in the third encounter to emerge victorious by a margin of 2-1. An exemplary bowling performance by the Tigers had curtailed the Lions to a subpar 235 before a flamboyant 84 by concussion substitute Tanzid Hasan and an 18-ball unbeaten blitzkrieg of 48 by man of the match Rishad Hossain sealed the deal with four wickets and 58 balls to spare. While celebrations deservingly ensued, former skipper Mushfiqur Rahim had a nasty troll up his sleeve to rub salts into the wounds of their rivals.

Najmul Hossain Shanto was waiting with the trophy with the entire team in front of a hoarding declaring them winners when Rahim nonchalantly walked up with a helmet in hand. The veteran wicket-keeper animatedly began to muddle with the equipment, eventually walking up to captain Najmul Hossain Shanto with arms flailed in disgust who reciprocated the action before dispensing with the helmet in a mocking fit of rage. The entire squad in the background could not help but break out into laughter, given the blatant reference to Mathews' timed-out incident at Wankhede in the 2023 World Cup where the Sri Lankan all-rounder had become the first player in international cricket history to be dismissed in such manner owing to a faulty helmet strap.

Earlier in the T20I series preceding the ODIs, pacer Shoriful Islam had also tapped on an imaginary watch after scalping the first wicket of the bilateral affair, and the entire Sri Lankan team had pulled out the same celebration following their series victory. Rahim's antics were simply the latest addition to the expanding repertoire of cheeky trolling between the two teams and caused much amusement on Twitterati.
