IPL | Gujarat rise with Gill and Buttler as Hyderabad’s playoff dream fades into dusk

Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 38 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gujarat’s innings was anchored by half-centuries from Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill, guiding them to a total of 224/6 while SRH couldn’t form solid partnerships, ultimately fell short and lost the match.

‌Desperate to seal a playoff spot, Gujarat was put in to bat first by Sunrisers skipper Pat Cummins. The opening duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan were off to a blazing start, finding boundaries and pushing the scorecard to 53/0 in four overs. The duo continued the carnage, and at the end of the powerplay, Gujarat’s scorecard read at 82/0. With pacers getting thrashed, Cummins brought in Zeeshan Ansari to aim to break the opening stand with his leg spin. And the decision worked well when Ansari scalped Sudharsan and broke the fiery opening stand in the seventh over. Thereafter, Jos Buttler walked in to bat and Gill notched up a 62-run stand and pushed the scorecard to 140/1 in 12 overs. But Gill’s great knock of 76 off 38 came to an end when he was run out in the 13th over. With Washington Sundar and Buttler, Gujarat reached 188/2 in 17 overs, with the English veteran scoring a 31-ball 50. He continued to score big, and his 65 off 37 took Gujarat to 224/6 in 20 overs.

 

In response, Sunrisers Hyderabad openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head got off to a fiery start, racing to 45/0 in four overs. However, Prasidh Krishna ended the partnership by removing Head in the fifth over. While Abhishek continued to bat confidently, wickets kept tumbling at the other end. After Ishan Kishan's dismissal, Sharma also fell with the scoreboard reading 139/3 in 15 overs. The collapse continued as Heinrich Klaasen, Aniket Verma, and Kamindu Mendis were dismissed in quick succession, leaving the visitors struggling at 152/6 and still needing 73 runs from just 16 balls. Although Pat Cummins and Nitish Kumar Reddy struck a few big sixes towards the end, it was too little, too late. Gujarat Titans eventually secured a 38-run win and climbed to second place on the points table, strengthening their chances of making the playoffs.
