Mauro Icardi scored a hat trick, the third goal in the 89th minute, to win the 219th Milan derby at the San Siro yesterday. In the Premier League, Everton needed a stoppage-time Wayne Rooney penalty to split the points with Brighton while Southampton and Newcastle also played out a draw.

It was Italian international, Antonio Candreva, who started off the proceedings in the 13th minute of the game when he beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a curling effort but found the crossbar in his way. But it was the Italian who set up the first goal of the game, as he put in a brilliant ball from the right wing for Icardi, who glanced it into the far corner to open the scoring on the day.

Milan thought they had an equalizer early in the second half when Mateo Pablo Musacchio placed the ball into the net after Andre Silva had hit the upright with a left-footed curler, but the former was offside. But Milan weren't to be denied as Suso picked up the ball on the right wing and placed the ball beautifully into the far corner to level the scores with 10 minutes into the second half.

Inter, who had been subdued for most of the second half, regained their lead seven minutes later through their captain, who volleyed an Ivan Perisic cross from the left flank into the far corner. Milan, however, kept piling on the pressure and were rewarded with an equalizer in the 83rd minute when Giacomo Bonaventura poked in a Fabio Borini cross from close range. There was, however, some more drama left as Inter were handed a controversial penalty a minute from time and Icardi sent Donnarumma the wrong way to earn the bragging rights for the team in blue.

Everton's struggles in the league continued as they were held to a draw by Brighton at the Falmer Stadium yesterday. After the Merseyside club dominated proceedings for most of the game, it was the hosts who took the lead through Anthony Knockaert who put the ball in the back of the net after Jose Izquierdo's shot had been blocked. But after Bruno Saltor was adjudged to have fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box, Rooney slotted in the equalizer from the spot to share the points with the hosts.

Isaac Hayden handed the Magpies in the lead with a well-placed shot from 25 yards before Manolo Gabbiadini scored the Saints' fourth home goal of the season to level the game. However, the parity lasted just 87 seconds as Ayoze Perez beat Forster from a tight angle to put the Tyneside club in the lead for the second time in the game. Gabbiadini, though, secured a point for the hosts from 12 yards after Florian Lejeune fouled Shane Long inside the box.
