Jamshedpur FC striker Gaurav Mukhi’s controversial age has come into the limelight once again as the debate ensued after he came off the bench to level the match against Bengaluru FC last week. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has now stated that they will look into the issue.

Mukhi was the called the youngest ever goalscorer in ISL by the commentator as he slotted in the ball at the right corner of the goal collecting the ball from Mario Arques, minutes after coming off the bench. Even the ISL website claimed the same with the player from Jharkhand winning the “emerging player of the match” in Jamshedpur’s match against Bengaluru.

However, while his quality and scintillating form hasn’t come under the scanner, his so-called “young sensation” tag has. Apart from his moustache, and well-built physique, Mukhi has also been involved in an age-fraud scandal previously that has spurred the AIFF to ask its players' status committee to investigate the allegations against him.

"We will pass on the matter to the relevant committees - the players status committee first or the disciplinary committee to look into the discrepancy regarding his age," said AIFF general secretary Kushal Das to PTI on Tuesday.

"The discrepancy is regarding his passport which shows that he is 2002 born and a statement he issued in 2015 which stated that he is 1999 born."

The incident in discussion took place back in 2015 during the Sub-Junior National Football Championship. Jharkhand had smothered Goa 8-3 in the finals but were stripped off the honours after it was found that as many as five players were overage. AIFF had fined them one lakh as a result and Mukhi was one of the players, who later confessed to it.

According to Goal, the commentator even went on to the extent of stating that Mukhi was only 11-year-old when ISL had started back in 2014. If the AIFF probe sees the allegations to be true, the youngest players of the league would be ATK’s Komal Thatal and Chennaiyin FC's Jerry Lalrinzuala.
