Reports | Jan Vertonghen tempted to sign new Tottenham deal
Negotiations between Tottenham and Jan Vertonghen over a new deal have stalled but the Belgian is now tempted to sign a new contract after the arrival of Jose Mourinho. The former Chelsea manager replaced Mauricio Pochettino over the international break and has won his first two games with the club.
Tottenham’s biggest problem, barring their position in the table, this season has been the fact that not one but three players are running down their contract. Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld all have less than seven months left on their current deals and that does allow them to talk to foreign clubs in January. However, while negotiations with Eriksen have gone nowhere both the defenders are still on the fence over a new deal.
But Sky Sports News has reported that Jan Vertonghen is now tempted to sign a new deal following the arrival of Jose Mourinho. The report further added that the Belgian was open to holding talks over an extension when Pochettino was the manager but no formal discussions between Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy and Vertonghen’s agents have taken place as of yet.
Like both Eriksen and Alderweireld, the 32-year-old was linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma over the summer but Tottenham told any suitors that he was not for sale. Reports have indicated that the interest for the Belgian is still ever-present with Vertonghen still recovering from an injury that has kept him out for large parts of this season.
