CAB president Sourav Ganguly is confident that the Eden Gardens wicket will be up and ready for the second ODI against Australia on September 21 despite incessant rains in Eastern India for almost a week. Earlier, curator Sujan Mukherjee stated that things were getting very difficult due to rains.

After demolishing the Lankans in all three formats, the Virat Kohli-led side have set their eyes on Australia as Steve Smith & co. arrive in the country to play a limited overs series which comprises 5 ODIs and 3 T20Is. But the nonstop rains in the Eastern India, particularly Kolkata, have put a doubt over the Eden ODI that is set to be played on September 21. Even two days ago, Mukherjee had said that it would be very difficult to prepare a track since the non-stop rains ensured that the ground was covered and the groundsmen didn’t have the opportunity to let the wicket bake under the sun.

But now, Ganguly has come out and clarified that the preparation is on course and that the pitch would be ready for the September 21 game.

"The rain has stopped. The ground is in good shape and will be ready for the ODI," Ganguly told reporters after a pitch inspection on Thursday evening.

Excited with the bright and sunny weather in last few days, Mukherjee also expressed his happiness over the preparation of the pitch.

"Everything is fine now. It's been about a week that it has not rained. I'm very, very happy with the pitch preparation which is going on full swing for the September 21 ODI. It will be a good sporting wicket as usual," Mukherjee said.

"However I don't have control over the weather."

India will kick start their home leg of the 2017-18 season with the five-match ODI series against Australia, the first of which will be played in Chennai on September 17. Following the series opener in Chennai, India and Australia travel more than 1300 kilometers for their next ODI in Kolkata on the 21st.

It seems the selectors have closed the door on Yuvraj Singh in the Indian team as they ignored him for the Board President's XI, which will play against Australia in a warm-up match. The selectors chose to award last season's Vijay Hazare Trophy best performers by including them in the squad.
