Reports: Misbah-ul-Haq likely to become Pakistan's next head coach
The Pakistan Cricket Board is looking to recruit a new head coach for the national side before the Sri Lanka tour and former captain Misbah-ul-Haq is the front-runner in the race. Pakistan Cricket has been trying to remodel their structure ever since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 debacle.
The PCB didn't renew the contract of former head coach Mickey Arthur, who was associated with the team for three years, after the conclusion of the showpiece event. And now, the board is looking to replace him ahead of the series in Sri Lanka. As reports suggest, Arthur was keen on spending a couple of years more as Pakistan’s coach but the board dethroned him and also sacked his coaching staff.
As suggested by a report in news.com.pk, former Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq is in the race of the role of the head coach and will likely seal the spot over everyone else due to his reputation. The veteran batsman has no prior experience in coaching but his experience as captain will help him mentor the team, also he is respected a lot by the team.
The 45-year-old retired from the game during the West Indies tour in 2017 along with Younis Khan that had left a huge gap in the structure of the team. He represented Pakistan in 75 Tests and led the team in 56 of them and is regarded as one of the finest Test captains of the national side. He also played 162 ODIs and 29 T20Is.
Besides Misbah, the other big name in the race is Mike Hesson, who was associated with the Black Caps till June 2018. Under Hesson, New Zealand had reached the final of the 2015 World Cup.
