VIDEO | Umpire failure to notice Glenn Maxwell's 'fake fielding' costs India five runs
Ever since the 'fake fielding' rule came into effect, fielders have become more cautious about that and it is rare to see it in cricket. However, taking the benefit of the umpire’s lack of attention, Glenn Maxwell got away by doing the same thing, which meant that India were deprived of five runs.
There was a lot of controversy surrounding the fake throw rule by the ICC and many people called for the abolishment of the rule to make the game fairer. But the approach of the ICC is very clear that cricket should be played in the right manner and one shouldn’t use wrong means to threaten the batsmen. However, to implement the rule perfectly, the umpire needs to be watchful.
On the third ball of the 42nd over, Ravindra Jadeja came down the track to guide a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery and the 135.8kph ball had enough pace behind it to be glanced to the third-man region. The Saurashtra all-rounder did exactly that as he steered the ball to the wide of backward square-leg, where Maxwell was stationed.
The ball missed Maxwell and went into the deep, but the Victorian suddenly rose up and in an act that is clearly the violation of the fake fielding rule, he threw the arms like he had the ball in his hand. The fielder in the deep collected it before throwing it to wicket-keeper Alex Carey, but the umpire had altogether missed the instance. India were deprived of five runs that, ideally, they should have been awarded.
