Indian goalkeeper Subrata Paul on Sunday said that an extended season of the Indian Super League is needed if Indian football is to improve in the long term. Earlier, Brazil legend and FC Goa coach Zico had expressed similar views about the duration of the two-season-old league.

India currently lie at 162nd in the FIFA rankings, and with the ISL lasting only about 2 months, its impact seems to be restricted. Paul believes that the national team’s fortunes could well and truly depend on how the ISL is taken forward.

"If the Indian Super League is extended and made it like any other football league across the world, football will certainly benefit," said the custodian, reported dna.

With many of the established stars on their last legs, the national side needs a fresh infusion of talent, and the ISL would contribute heavily believes the DSK Shivajians keeper. "We are passing through a transition phase where senior players like Baichung Bhutia and Climax Lawrence. Sunil Chhetri and me are the highest capped players. Now the average age of team is around 24. This bunch is talented but needs a couple of years to blossom. I am sure you will see a different India team in next five years. ISL will be the biggest contributor," added Paul.
