NorthEast United's Federico Gallego, who missed the start of the season due to an injury, returned to the side for a preparatory match against I-League team East Bengal. The Uruguayan, who was crucial in taking NorthEast to the playoffs, was injured against Bengaluru in the last season's semi-final.

Uruguayan midfielder Federico Gallego returns to active football after an injury and has featured in the preparatory game against I-League giants East Bengal. The 29-year-old played 75 minutes in the 0-0 draw against the Red and Gold Brigade.

Federico Gallego was the main player under coach Eelco Schattorie, who took NorthEast United to their first-ever playoffs last season. The Uruguayan midfielder was the engine of the Highlanders with five goals and four assists in 20 games. However, a fatal injury in the crucial second leg of the playoffs ended his season and his team's hopes.

For 250 days, the player missed the action and he had to undergo a surgery to be back in shape. Moreover, the Highlanders management put faith in the playmaker despite missing the first games of the current season.

Robert Jarni's NorthEast United are currently unbeaten in the season and are sitting third in the table with eight points from four games. Gallego's return will further boost NorthEast United's chance this season, with talismanic Asamoah Gyan in the front the fans are excited.
