The draws for Wimbledon 2016 were made on Friday with eternal favourite Roger Federer in the same half of the men’s draw as World No.1 Novak Djokovic with Andy Murray in the other half. Serena Williams and Garbine Muguruza are in different halves in the women’s side of the draw.

Novak Djokovic will begin his defence of the Wimbledon crown against Britain’s James Ward and could possibly face seven-time champion Roger Federer in the last four. The Swiss great begins his campaign against Guido Pella of Argentina and might run into Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals. Home favourite Andy Murray is in the bottom half of the draw as the second seed and might have to battle 2015 French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the final. Murray will go up against a familiar face in Liam Broady, another Brit, in the first round with last year’s semi-finalist Richard Gasquet his possible last-eight opponent, if he manages to get past Nick Kyrgios in the pre-quarters.

With more than a handful of possible winners for this year’s edition, Rafael Nadal’s absence might not be felt at Wimbledon this season. The fireworks are set to begin in the first round with some of the notable matches being Kyrgios vs Stepanek, Verdasco vs Tomic, Groth vs Nishikori and Isner vs Baghdatis.

In the women’s singles, top seed Serena Williams will open against either Christina Mchale or Daniela Hantuchova, depending on who manages to qualify. French Open champion and losing finalist from last year Garbine Muguruza will go up against Italian Camila Giorgi in her opening match and might have to go past Venus Williams and Angelique Kerber for a repeat final against Serena Williams. Agnieszka Radwanska might be Serena’s possible semi-final opponent in her quest for a seventh Wimbledon title. Mouth-watering clashes in the first round include Wozniacki taking on Kuznetsova and Robson vs Kerber.
