Virat Kohli climbs to second position in ICC Test rankings

Virat Kohli has moved up three places to grab the second position among batsmen in the ICC Test Rankings, after registering his career-best score in the final Test against Sri Lanka. He leapfrogged David Warner, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kane Williamson, and Joe Root after the brilliant run in the series.

Kohli’s first-innings knock of 243 runs in New Delhi was followed by a 50 as he finished with 610 runs in the series helping India win the series 1-0. Kohli, who slammed back-to-back double-centuries and recorded three-figure scores in three consecutive matches, started the series in the sixth position. Now, he has managed to overcome Australia's David Warner, fellow teammate Cheteshwar Pujara, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, and England's Joe Root in the chart with his stupendous run, which saw him averaging 152.50.

Though there is a 45-point difference between him and Australia captain Steve Smith, Kohli would be eyeing the chance of reaching the No.1 position in all three formats in the upcoming South Africa series. Smith has also been in a terrific form of late and last week reached 941 points - to become the joint fifth-highest in terms of the points tally in batting history of Test cricket. He is now on 938 points while Kohli is on 893 points and if the Indian skipper manages to do the same, he will join former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden, who are the only other two batsmen to have topped in all three formats.

In the latest rankings, which also takes into account the second Test between Australia and England in Adelaide and the first Test in Wellington between New Zealand and West Indies, Murali Vijay has moved up three places to 25th and middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma has also climbed six places up to the 40th position.

For Sri Lanka, skipper Dinesh Chandimal has gained eight places to take the ninth position after finishing the series with 366 runs and all-rounder Angelo Mathews has moved up seven places to the 23rd position after scoring 111 in the first innings.
