While Sachin Tendulkar was inclined towards Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian team, the other two members of the CAC- Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman- wanted Virender Sehwag for the role, reports have emerged. But for the sake of a huge decision being unanimous, everyone supported Shastri.

The CAC, on Tuesday night, recommended Ravi Shastri's name as chief coach of the Indian team, and along with him they also recommended the names of former India pacer Zaheer Khan as the bowling consultant and former batting legend Rahul Dravid's name as overseas batting consultant. But Ganguly and Laxman were not in favour of Shastri’s appointment and rather wanted former India opener and their one-time teammate Virender Sehwag for the role, it has emerged.

As per a report in the Telegraph, for the sake of making the huge decision a unanimous one, they went along with Sachin’s suggestion. It was also reported that this was part of a quid pro quo after the latter had gone along with Anil Kumble over Shastri last year when Ganguly and Laxman had supported the spin legend.

An unnamed BCCI official, privy to the development, said, “Given the stature they enjoy, the trio couldn't obviously be seen as standing divided on an issue affecting Indian cricket, not a local club team.

“It's one thing to be teammates and quite another to have tremendous respect for each other right through. Sachin, Sourav and Laxman need to be applauded for not allowing such a big decision like the appointment of the head coach to be decided by vote.”

It has also been reported that as Indian skipper Virat Kohli intended to work with Shastri, Ganguly and Laxman went along with Shastri to avoid another Kumble-like situation. However, Ganguly later rubbished the report of any difference of opinion and stated that the decision was a "unanimous one".

Meanwhile, it is understood that Tendulkar recommended Rahul Dravid as the batting consultant on overseas tours, while Laxman suggested that Zaheer Khan be named the bowling consultant.
