Tom Moody and Richard Pybus presentations far better than Ravi Shastri's reveals BCCI source
A well-placed BCCI source revealed that Tom Moody and Richard Pybus should have been the frontrunners for the post of the head coach based on the exceptional presentations that they pitched to the CAC. However, it was Ravi Shastri who bagged the job based on his relationship with the Indian players.
The drama behind the appointment of the new coach doesn't seem to end and a new development has further added to the numerous reports and rumours that have been doing the rounds.
The CAC comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman were burdened with the responsibility of choosing the next coach for the Indian team based on three primary aspects, the technical aspects of cricket, the vision of taking Indian cricket forward and past experience of managing top players. However, if sources are to be believed the 3-member committee only judged Ravi Shastri on the last requirement and found him suitable for the job.
According to a report in DNA, a BCCI official believes that former Australian cricketer Tom Moody and Englishman Richard Pybus should have been the likely choices for the director and the chief coach based on their brilliant presentations while Ravi Shastri wasn't even in the frame when it came to the experience that the two held.
"Going by the best person for the job, Moody should have been made Director of overall coaching staff with Pybus as chief coach. But then it was in the hands of these three gentlemen to decide and they picked what they probably thought was best for Team India," the BCCI source told DNA.
It is to be noted that Tom Moody has a vast amount of experience when it comes to coaching as he has formerly managed the Sri Lankan national team followed by various jobs at different domestic leagues. Meanwhile, Richard Pybus has had the opportunity of coaching the Pakistan team two times, but it was Ravi Shastri who was appointed as the Indian coach owing to his previous stint with the Indian team that made him a popular name in the dressing room.
"It was his ability to lift the morale of the team even during a bad phase that made him popular inside
The source also revealed that the CAC named former Indian players Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid to assist Shastri, who lacks the technical ability and experience required in coaching.
"Who doesn't know that Shastri is not technically equipped to coach at the top level. It was believed that he needs people around him to take care of on-field coaching. And that's why these names were recommended," the source said.
However, Ravi Shastri wanted Bharat Arun to accompany him as the bowling coach and the Indian bowlers approved Shastri's choice.
"Even the team players, especially the
The source stated that Rahul Dravid's name for the batting consultant was uncontested owing to his availability on a tour-to-tour basis and Shastri recommending no names for the post.
"Dravid's name, we all understand, came because Shastri had no
However, it has been learned that the CAC's recommendations of the bowling and batting consultants have been put on hold by the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators who will take a final decision after meeting Ravi Shastri on Monday.
"Shastri will be coming back from his overseas trip on Monday morning and he is slated to meet Rai over lunch the same day. The names of batting and bowling coaches are likely to be
Meanwhile, the official suggested that Virender Sehwag needs time to gain experience to be roped in for the job.
"He should be roped in, as and when possible, for motivational lectures in the dressing room. To be considered as coach, he surely needs time and experience," the BCCI official said.
