Bharat Arun joins Ravi Shastri’s core team as India’s bowling coach
Former India pacer Bharat Arun has been confirmed as the bowling coach of the Indian cricket team by the three member committee formed by the Committee of Administrators. Earlier, newly appointed head coach, Ravi Shastri had put in a request with the BCCI to bring in Arun as the bowling coach.
Putting all the speculations to rest, the committee met Shastri in Mumbai today and announced Bharat Arun as the new bowling coach and Sanjay Bangar as the assistant coach of the team. R Sridhar, Shankar Basu, and Patrick Farhart will continue as the fielding coach, trainer and physio respectively. All five were appointed on a two-year contract that will run till the 2019 World Cup.
The appointments were made by CoA chairman Vinod Rai, who acted on the recommendations of BCCI’s acting president CK Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary and CoA member Diana Edulji.
Also, Rahul Dravid and Zaheer's Khan appointments will depend on their talks with the authorities (Amitabh Choudhary and Rahul Johri). Earlier, Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprises Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman had suggested the names of Dravid and Zaheer as the batting and bowling consultants respectively. But Shastri proposed his own choice for the core team and thanked the CAC for choosing him for the job.
“I was in England, I was watching tennis. I was very clear in my mind what my core team would be. And what you’ve just heard is my core team,” he said. “I’d like to thank the CAC. It’s a privilege and honour to be the head coach. I thank them for thinking I’m worthy enough to do the job.”
Arun, who has played two Tests and four One-Day Internationals for India, played the same role when Shastri was the team director from August 2014 to July 2016. Bangar and Sridhar were also part of the team under Shastri during that period and continued to be with the side under Anil Kumble. Shastri, though, said Dravid and Zaheer were most welcome as consultants to give their ‘invaluable’ inputs.

The appointments ended weeks of drama, but Amitabh Choudhary refused to call it a fiasco.
“In the first place, I’m absolutely clear in my view that it was not a fiasco,” he said. “As Ravi explained, once he was appointed the head coach, you obviously had to think of his responsibilities which come with that appointment. As he has made so abundantly clear, he wanted his core team. The other two gentlemen (Dravid and Zaheer) – they will be consultants, their contributions are going to be invaluable.”
