Virat Kohli finds himself in an undesirable position right before their opening game against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy as he may not have the final say in who India's new coach will be. Kohli will be asked his opinion, but the final decision will be taken by Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman.

Captains have been consulted before appointing the head coach, Kohli will have a say in this even now, but the final decision will be taken by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. This has been conveyed to all by Vinod Rai, chairman of the Committee of Administrators (CoA).

"Kohli can say whatever he wants but he won't get his choice of coach until the advisory panel agrees to it. He doesn't have the veto power to decide the new coach. He only has the power to select the playing XI. This does not mean that he can't give his preferences. He can spell out his choice of candidate but the final call will be taken by the CAC," a top BCCI source told TOI.

Though CoA will not be a part of the decision-making process, Rai will meet the Indian cricketers in London while the team prepares for the Champions Trophy along with CAC members and board officials to discuss the issue. Sources said Kohli has already spoken to Tendulkar about this matter and even consulted Ganguly and Laxman recently.

Further, Virender Sehwag reportedly put in his application for the position of the head coach after an assurance from Kohli. However, because of the belief that foreign coaches are relatively less controversial as compared to the Indian ones who come in with considerable baggage, the BCCI would prefer someone like Tom Moody, who has coached Australia and Sri Lanka previously and is presently coaching the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

"Indian coaches are good but foreign coaches actually work without any biases," a source said, adding that the CAC members are also open to Sehwag's selection as the coach.

Kumble is a direct entry for those in contention for the head coach and still has some supporters in the BCCI because his decisions were aimed at building a team for the future. Moreover, he promoted cricketers like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul and is even attributed to being the biggest factor in Pujara's brilliant performance in the home season.
