Anil Kumble likely to be retained as India’s coach

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, and VVS Laxman have reportedly decided to retain Anil Kumble as head coach of the Indian team. BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, too, released a statement to defer the selection process for the time being.

Tendulkar, Ganguly, and Laxman were scheduled to meet BCCI CEO Rahul Johri after the India-Sri Lanka game in London to decide coach Anil Kumble's fate. And it is being understood that all three were a bit hesitant to remove Kumble from the post, or even interview him due to Kumble’s perfect record during his tenure, in which India lost only one series- a 1-0 series defeat to West Indies in Florida. If Kumble is to be removed, it will send a message of bad blood brewing in the team dressing room.

But the CAC’s decision will have to be approved at the June 26 Special General Meeting (SGM) after BCCI acting president CK Khanna requested acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary to defer the process, which means Kumble will travel with the Indian team to West Indies for the short limited-over series. But, the Board explained that it should defer the decision to announce the coach as it would be unwise to do that during the course of a major tournament.

Earlier, on May 25, the BCCI had invited applications for the post of ‘Head Coach’ for the Senior India Men’s Cricket Team with a deadline of May 31 and former Indian opener Virender Sehwag had submitted his application for the post. Apart from Sehwag, former India batsman Lalchand Raiput, who has earlier coached the India A and Afghanistan side, and Tom Moody, the current coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sri Lanka, were among the high-profile names to apply for the post. Englishman Richard Pybus, who has coached Pakistan twice in his career, had also put forward his name for the lucrative position.
