The Board of Control for Cricket in India has invited more applications for the post of the Indian head coach following Anil Kumble's resignation. The Indian board suggested that Kumble's automatic entry during the last round might have discouraged people from sending in applications.

Anil Kumble resigned from the post of head coach of the Indian team yesterday citing his differences with Indian skipper Virat Kohli as the reason for the same. Kumble, whose contract had been extended up to India's tour of West Indies refused to accompany the team after a meeting with the Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC).

Following the move, BCCI told PTI that a period of 7-10 days may be allotted for inviting fresh applications for the post from qualified personnel.

"Look, when we had invited applications last time, Anil was an automatic entry. That might have prompted a lot of people from thinking that what's the need to apply when current coach is doing well and is in the mix," a senior BCCI official said on Tuesday.

"Now the situation has completely changed. A lot of people will now be interested knowing it's an open field," the official added.

Virender Sehwag, who has applied for the post, is being considered the favourite for the newly vacated role. When questioned about the same. the BCCI official replied, "Sehwag's application has no relation with BCCI to call for more applications. In the end, it would be CAC which will decide on the next coach. More the options, better the choice."

Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput, and Doda Ganesh are the only applicants for the time being.

Australian bowling coach Craig McDermott had also sent an application, which was denied by the BCCI as it arrived after the stipulated period. The last date for submission of applications according to the previous notification released by BCCI was May 31st.
