India’s no.1 spot in Test rankings shall not be threatened even if they are subjected to a 5-0 whitewash by England in the ongoing Test series, which looks like a possibility now. The only impact of the whitewash shall be that England shall jump from rank no.5 to rank no.2 in the Test rankings.

India have been struggling in England conditions as they have traditionally done outside the country. After exhibiting decent competitiveness in the first Test match when they lost to England with a close margin of 31 runs, the second Test saw them giving way too early and consequently losing by an innings and 159 runs.

India's loss at the Lord's has irked a feeling of disappointment in most of the fans throughout the world who now have started to draw comparisons between the current Test series and the 2011 tour, when England had whitewashed India and snatched their no.1 Test ranking.

In the 2011 tour, MS Dhoni was leading the team and India couldn't win a single match against England as Andrew Strauss led his side to a whitewash. Not only did they lose the series then, but also ceded their number one spot to England.

However, for Virat Kohli’s team, their ranking won't be under threat. Such has been India's dominance back home and in subcontinental conditions that even if they are handed a 5-0 drubbing yet again, they will still be the number 1 side in the world.

As the table stands now, India are sitting with 125 points and is the number one Test side with South Africa, who were whitewashed 2-0 by Sri Lanka in the Test series, hold the number two position. England, who are currently ranked number five with 97 points, cannot quite inflict the damage as far as the points table is concerned. However, if they do manage to walk away with the series 5-0, they will jump up to the number two spot on the table.
