MI vs CSK | Player Ratings - Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav star as Mumbai Indians thrash Chennai Super Kings
A truly all round performance from Hardik Pandya allied with some able support from Suryakumar Yadav (59) and Jason Behrendorff (2/22) helped Mumbai Indians seal a 37-run victory over Chennai Super Kings. Hardik scored a quickfire 25 off 8 balls before finishing with figures of 3/20 with the ball.
Rohit Sharma (2.5/10): Rohit needed some time to get back to his T20 mentality after very scratchy performances in the first three games of the season. But Ravindra Jadeja didn’t allow him to do so by cramping him for
Quinton de Kock (2/10): The South African is naturally a laid back person and it is difficult to figure out if he was actually bogged down by the pressure exerted by Deepak Chahar from one end. He was dismissed while trying to break the shackles in the third over and that could be attributed to the pacer’s length.
Suryakumar Yadav (8/10): There were calls to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Ishan Kishan, but the Mumbaikar silenced them with a measured performance. Of course, one could argue it wasn’t a fluent
Yuvraj Singh (2/10): Wankhede and Yuvraj share a love story like no other. He may not have impacted the World Cup final like the way he had done in other matches of the tournament, but the eventual prize made him a celebrated character for Indian cricket fans and Wankhede will always be that special ground for him. But his ‘home’ return didn’t work out well for the southpaw as he could only score four runs in his six-ball stay at the crease. Looked under-confident and even the combined chants couldn’t lift him.
Krunal Pandya (7/10): Did well to hang in there after the top-order failure and waited for his opportunity to get going. It was crucial at that stage because Suryakumar Yadav looked a bit fuzzy in the beginning and Dhoni’s assortment of pacers was good as well. The
Kieron Pollard (7.5/10): 17 runs off 7 balls with a couple even threatening to take Wankhede roof down, Kieron Pollard played a perfect cameo lower down the order. Add to that, his brilliant ground fielding helped Mumbai make an early statement in the run-chase. One of those days where he didn’t need to contribute heavily with the
Hardik Pandya (9.5/10): His six-hitting ability is special and probably special enough to call him one of the finest six-hitters in T20 cricket now. In the company of Pollard, Hardik formed a 46-run partnership off just 16 balls and was responsible
Rahul Chahar (5/10): With Deepak Chahar playing for Chennai, Rahul Chahar would have hoped to get a one-on-one battle with his big brother, either while batting or while bowling. That didn’t transpire, but the young Chahar was quite
Jasprit Bumrah (7.5/10): If the IPL would find a sponsor for hitting the deck hard effectively, then Jasprit Bumrah will take the award in every Mumbai Indians match. He did that brilliantly tonight - at times off the good length, most times on yorker lengths - which would definitely go as a tutorial package for the young pacers.
Lasith Malinga (8/10): Mumbai Indians’ most experienced player found a way out every time he steps onto the field, and tonight he just showed what the team will miss when he will go back home tomorrow for the Super Provincial tournament in Sri Lanka. Was just terrific with the old ball, managing to move it both ways, and surprisingly extracted sufficient amount of reverse swing at the backend of the innings.
Jason Behrendorff (7.5/10): This is the kind of debut cricketers fantasize about and Jason Behrendorff would probably be over the moon after the game. His first ball was a simple outswinger and ended his spell with a back-of-the-hand slower ball, but in between Behrendorff did everything to keep Chennai batsmen on their toes. 2/22 would give him further confidence to do well in the upcoming matches.
