Despite CAC member Anshuman Gaekwad's suggestion that Ravi Shastri will remain in office, the BCCI has received as many as 2000 applications for the position of head coach of the Indian team. Ever since India lost the WC semifinal match, there have been numerous speculations about the position.

The big names on the list of applicants range from the very experienced Australian all-rounder Tom Moody to New Zealand’s ex-coach Mike Hesson. Earlier, one of the first names in this league that had emerged was that of the Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene when he expressed his interest in the said position. However, the BCCI didn’t receive a formal application from the right-handed batsman. The list also includes familiar Indian names such as the 90s all-rounder Robin Singh and former manager and Zimbabwe coach Lalchand Rajput.

According to Mirror, the list is extended with many other qualified and aspiring international applicants whose resumes were sent by their agents of the aspirants and the BCCI may take more time to evaluate all the names. The BCCI has cleared that the decision on this matter will be made by the Kapil Dev-led Indian Cricket advisory committee(CAC) without being influenced by any kind of partial favouring. Anshuman Gaekwad, co-member of the CAC, said that they will go in with an open mind when they sit down to interview the short-listed candidates.

Apart from the role of head coach, applications for other positions have also come in. The biggest news in this regard came out when former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes sent in his application for the role of fielding coach. As for the incumbent coaching staff, they have also been given a contract extension which will cover the entire tour of West Indies.

As of now, the BCCI have retained Shastri and his contract has been extended which keeps him in office for the upcoming West Indies tour that starts on August 3. India will play three Twenty20 internationals, three ODIs, and two Tests in the said tour which is to be played in the USA and the Caribbean.
