After the BCCI AGM meeting on Monday, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly confirmed ‘no extension’ of tenures for any of the five members of the selection committee. Outgoing chairman of the selection committee MSK Prasad said his team did their best in terms of creating proper bench strength.

MSK Prasad was appointed as the chief selector/ selector for South Zone in 2015, BCCI follows a strict tenure of 4 years for the selectors. It meant 2019 was going to be Prasad’s last year in the post. However, there were speculations of his extension as India’s T20I World Cup campaign will begin few months later.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, after the AGM meeting, said there would be new set of selectors appointed. “Those whose tenure is over is over,” he had said.

Prasad said in an interview that he and his team did their best to create a good bench strength and BCCI has to follow certain rules for tenure.“That [extension of tenures] is not up to me to talk. BCCI will do whatever it deems fit. Whatever the policy is, the BCCI has to follow,” he said.

When asked, whether there are any regrets for leaving before the T20I WC, the former Indian wicket-keeper said, “I don’t think so (regret ending tenure just a year before T20 World Cup). For everything, there is a time factor. Whatever time that you have, you should look to give your best. We have done it, I think. We have left enough bench strength. If the team can get the combinations right, I am sure India will win the T20 World Cup next year.”

Gagan Khoda, Central Zone selector was also appointed in 2015 and his tenure has also come to an end. Meanwhile, former chief selector Dilip Vengsakar’s name has come out as a contender for the chairman’s position if the CAC approves.

It was during Vengsarkar’s first stint as chief selector, Ganguly made his comeback into the team after his infamous omission during Ganguly-Chappel saga.
