IPL 2019 | Umpires not to be penalised despite RCB no-ball controversy
The umpires, who failed to signal a no-ball in Royal Challenger Bangalore’s match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday, have not been penalised by the match referee, claims an IPL Official. He has also dismissed earlier reports of Virat Kohli barraging into the referee’s room and shouting expletives.
Match referee Manu Nayyar has not filed any critical report against umpires Sundaram Ravi and C Nandan, for their howler in Thursday’s match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which became very controversial as RCB had lost the game for the huge umpiring blunder.
“Nayyar’s report is also not very critical,” said an IPL official aware of the discussion, reported PTI.
RCB’s chase of 187 was dragged till the last over, and the equation came to seven runs required off the final delivery. Shivam Dube failed to score and the Rohit Sharma-led side won the match by six runs. However, the replays showed that Lasith Malinga had overstepped and the umpire S Ravi had failed to see that, which left the fans and skipper Virat Kohli fuming.
“Virat was upset and told Ravi that this no-ball cost them dearly. Ravi expressed his regret and admitted that he didn’t take the right decision at that moment,” the official added.
There were even unconfirmed reports that the RCB skipper had stormed into Nayyar’s room after the match, and also shouted expletives, but the official was quick to rubbish the reports.
“The reports of Kohli barging in match referee’s room and all that published in a website is a figment of
Virat Kohli had expressed his displeasure in the post-match presentation as he went on to term the mistake as ridiculous and suggested the umpires to be more careful hereafter.
“Once Virat said what he had to during the presentation ceremony, why does he even need to go to Nayyar? He made it clear what he felt about umpiring,” signed off the official.
