World Cup 2019 | Virat Kohli is phenomenal as a skipper, says Simon Katich
Former Australian cricketer Simon Katich has heaped praise on Virat Kohli by saying that the right-handed batsman is a phenomenal skipper. Kohli will be leading the high-on-confidence Indian side for the first time in the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales, starting May 30.
India are one of the red hot favourites going into the World Cup and has been a force to be reckoned in recent times with the white ball. Simon Katich feels that India have a well-oiled side and is being led well by Virat Kohli. Kohli has played in two World Cups but this will be his first as the captain. His captaincy came under scrutiny after Royal Challengers Bangalore finished at the bottom of the points table in the Indian Premier. However, Katich feels that Kohli is a phenomenal skipper and is driven to be the best.
“I don’t want to write Virat off. He has led India to a maiden Test series win in Australia. He is phenomenal as a skipper. There is no doubt he is driven to be the best as a leader and as a player. I won’t be surprised if he achieves that goal with quality players in the Indian squad,” Katich told TOI in an exclusive interview.
Australia, on the other hand, have started to peak just at the right time after beating India and Pakistan in bilateral ODI series. England have also fared well in recent times and will be the team to beat in their backyard, while one just cannot write off South Africa and Pakistan.
“I believe they (Australia) have got a lot of confidence after winning the ODI series against Pakistan. I know it is going to be a challenge because there are a number of big teams in the World Cup. England are a tough opponent when playing in England. India, Pakistan and South Africa are the other tough opponents in the World Cup. I want to wish them all the luck,” Katich added.
