ICC Test Rankings | Virat Kohli falls 11 points behind Steve Smith; Rohit Sharma powers into top 10
After being just one point shy of Steve Smith heading into the Ranchi Test, Virat Kohli's inauspicious outing has seen him fall a further 10 points behind the Australian. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma jumped a staggering 12 places to break into the top 10, while Ajinkya Rahane moved four places to fifth.
Heading into the Ranchi Test with 936 points - a solitary point behind Steve Smith - all eyes were on the Indian skipper Virat Kohli to see if he could dethrone the Australian as the world's best Test batsman. However, it wasn't to be, as Kohli fell prey to South Africa's Anrich Nortje for just 12, failing to capitalize on a relatively flat Ranchi pitch. The dip meant that he ended up losing 10 points, taking his tally to 926, 11 points behind Smith.
But while it was bad news for Kohli, it was amazing news for India's ODI and Test vice-captains Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane respectively, who shot up the rankings thanks to their exploits in the third Test. Rohit, who scored his maiden double-century, moved up an unbelievable 12 places to number ten, while Rahane, who scored his first home century in over three years, moved up four places to sit comfortably on fifth, behind Cheteshwar Pujara.
Meanwhile, South Africa's Vernon Philander, who did not play in Ranchi, surprisingly leapfrogged India's Ravichandran Ashwin to move to the fifth spot in the ICC all-rounder's rankings, thanks to Ashwin having an unfruitful outing with both bat and ball in the third Test.
In the bowling front, Rabada, with 839 ranking points, retained his position at second next to Pat Cummins, despite underwhelming performances against India. However, two Indians - Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin - dropped one spot each to fourth and tenth respectively, leapfrogged by Jason Holder and Kemar Roach.
