Afghanistan earned a historic win, decimating Australia for the first time in T20I history. A 118-run opening run partnership between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz steered them to 148 before a Gulbadin Naib four-four eclipsed Glenn Maxwell’s valiant fifty in a 21-run win in Kingstown.

Eyeing a qualification berth in the semi-finals, Mitchell Marsh’s decision to field first backfired initially as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opted for a measured approach on a tricky surface against the Aussie attack. Following a 40-run powerplay, the tag team added 24 runs in the next four overs before switching gears. With the score reading 109/0 in 16 overs, Marcus Stoinis broke the 118-run opening stand after a sledging duel with Gurbaz, and Adam Zampa extracted a couple of wickets in the next over. Subsequently, Pat Cummins induced a hattrick in his last couple of overs but a Josh Hazlewood 19th over spilled 15 runs to steer Afghanistan to 148/6 in 20 overs.

Unlike their counterparts, Australia got off to a rocky start, losing Travis Head in the first over, followed by Mitchell Marsh and David Warner to wrap up a 33-run powerplay. Subsequently, Marcus Stoinis played second fiddle to Glenn Maxwell, adding 37 runs in the next four overs. While Maxwell peppered the Asian side from one end, the ploy to bring Gulbadin Naib into the attack paid rich dividends for the Atalans as he removed Stoinis, and Tim David within the next three overs. Right after, he got the better of Maxwell in the 15th over before Rashid Khan outsmarted Matthew Wade to keep Australia reeling at 111/6 in 16 overs. 14 runs came off the next three overs for the loss of three wickets before Fazalhaq Farooqi hit the final nail in the coffin, to hand a 21-run Afghanistan win over Australia. This was the first time that Afghanistan defeated Australia in a T20I fixture, thereby keeping all four teams in Group 1 in contention for the semi-finals.
