The role of an umpire is very important in deciding the fate of an outcome in a cricketing contest. However, the TV umpireā€™s decision to give Sanju Samson out over a catch in the deep triggered debates with the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals dugout split into two halves in Delhi.

Winning the toss and electing to field first, RR conceded 221 runs in the first innings, courtesy of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porelā€™s half-century. In reply, the Royals were in the hunt for the chase with Sanju Samson displaying a brilliant knock. However, the captainā€™s knock concluded, owing to a controversial umpire decision in the 16th over of the match.

On the fourth ball of the 16th over, Mukesh Kumar bowled a length delivery outside the stumps to Samson who smashed it across the line towards the long-on region. As the ball swirled towards Shai Hope at the edge of the ropes, the Caribbean star ended up grasping the ball with his feet near the cushions. Hope took a few steps near the boundary ropes to maintain balance and ensure that the feet did not touch the ropes. The TV umpire, Michael Gough, felt that Hope was clean with his hoppity ballet dance-like movements despite one angle displaying inconclusive evidence around Hopeā€™s right leg.Ā

This split the RR and DC dugout over the decision of out with Captain Samson refusing to walk off the field and indulging with the on-field umpire. While the DC owner, Parth Jindal was seen blown up in the stadium, Samson was seen fuming with Kumar Sangakkara and co. unhappy, thereby leaving the Twitterverse in a frenzy.
