Arsenal won an important game against Manchester United at home to brighten their chances of clinching a Champions League spot. Meanwhile, Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by visitors Southampton that saw them miss an opportunity to consolidate their position in the top four.

Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United

Arsene Wenger finally tasted success against Jose Mourinho in what was his 15th attempt as hosts Arsenal scored twice against Manchester United. A fatigued and injury-hit Manchester side allowed a first half chance go by when Wayne Rooney failed to score of a poor back-pass from Rob Holding.

The hosts on the other hand, scored both goals in a space of three minutes. Granit Xhaka opened the scoring for the Gunners with a long-range shot that was helped behind the goal line by an Ander Herrera deflection. Next on the scoresheet was former United striker Danny Welbeck, who headed the ball past David de Gea in the 57th minute to score for the third consecutive time against United. With this win, Arsenal ended United's 25-match unbeaten run and now stand an outside chance of finishing in the top-4. United manager Mourinho is aiming for a Europa League victory to book a berth in the Champions League.

Liverpool 0-0 Southampton

Liverpool's lacklustre display earned them a point against Southampton at the Anfield as they missed an opportunity to further the gap between them and fifth-placed Manchester United and sixth-placed Arsenal. James Milner's spot kick was saved brilliantly by Fraser Foster, who helped earn his side a valuable point away from home. 

The match lacked pace and intent from both sides. Although the point lifted Liverpool to third it is unlikely that the Reds will be able to hold on to the position.

Swansea City 1-0 Everton

Swansea City moved up from the drop zone thanks to a Fernando Llorente header in the first half which earned his side three valuable points. Everton have already qualified for the Europa League.
