Liverpool are in serious discussion over a move for RB Salzburg star Takumi Minamino with the Reds set to pay the forward’s £7.25 million release clause. Amongst a host of talented young stars at Salzburg, Minamino has been Liverpool’s top target but the club were put off by a £20 million valuation.

The Japanese forward impressed manager Jurgen Klopp during Salzburg’s two fixtures against Liverpool with the 24-year-old overshadowed by Erling Haaland’s performances. But that hasn’t seemed to affect the versatile forward with him contributing to 20 goals in just 22 appearances including 5 in six Champions League appearances. However, both the ESPN and the Guardian have reported that the Reds were initially put off by Takumi Minamino’s reported £20 million valuation.

Yet upon further inquiry, the Guardian has revealed that the 24-year-old’s release clause is set at £7.25 million with the Reds confident of negotiating a deal worth around that figure over a January move. Both Minamino and Haaland have been scouted by Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Marseille but ESPN has reported that Liverpool’s status in the Japanese forward has moved from merely interested to the club in serious discussions over a potential January move.

The reports have further indicated that the club are set to hand the 24-year-old forward a five-year deal with both parties putting the final touches to the deal within the next few days. It would make the former Cerezo Osaka forward only the club’s fourth major signing this season after Harvey Elliott, Adrian and Sepp van den Berg.
