CAC brokers peace between Kohli and Kumble
The Cricket Advisory Committee has reportedly held separate talks with Indian skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble in order to ensure a truce between the two. On Friday, it was announced that Anil Kumble will carry on his stint as the Indian head coach at least till the West Indies tour.
The Cricket Advisory Committee(CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman met BCCI CEO Rahul Johri late Thursday night and the meeting went on for more than two hours after which it was communicated that the CAC needed more time to think on the issue of interviewing new head coach prospects as it was difficult for them to overlook Anil Kumble's almost spotless record with the Indian team. The same committee had opted for Kumble over then team director Ravi Shastri a year ago.
It was also reported that the big three of Indian cricket held separate talks with Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble to resolve the differences between the two that have surfaced recently.
"The CAC has bought some time for Kumble and ensured he is not ignominiously removed after India's run in the Champions Trophy. He will travel with the team to West Indies. It's a short tour so there shouldn't be any problems," said a top source."Kohli is basically being asked to 'adjust' for a while more."
At the moment, the BCCI is unsure of when and where will the CAC interview the applicants for the post of the Indian head coach while the Indian team is set to leave for the Carribean on June 20th from London itself. India will play West Indies in a 5-match ODI series and a single T20I which will conclude on July 9th.
Meanwhile, CK Khanna, the acting BCCI president, wrote a personal letter to all the stakeholders requesting to postpone the selection of a new coach till the Special General Metting scheduled on June 26th where the matter would be discussed further.
"How could the coach be replaced in the middle of the Champions Trophy and with the tour to West Indies coming up? Everyone, including IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, was agreed on the fact that the matter of picking a new coach or giving Kumble an extension must be delayed." Khanna told TOI.
All the authorised personnel involved in the appointment of the coach have made a synonymous decision that the new selected coach would be offered a contract that would last till the 2019 World Cup in order to prevent any such similar controversies.
Kumble was chosen for a brief one-year contract courtesy him being a fresher to the post in June 2016 by the BCCI in anticipation of reassessing their decision had the former leg-spinner faltered.
